Ingredients:

  • For the Main Dish:
    • 1 medium head of cabbage, shredded or thinly sliced
    • 6 slices of bacon, chopped
    • 1 large onion, finely chopped
    • 3 cloves garlic, minced
    • Salt and pepper, to taste
    • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional)
    • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar (optional)
    • Fresh parsley, chopped, for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Ingredients:
  • Shred the Cabbage:
    • Cut the cabbage in half and remove the core. Thinly slice or shred the cabbage. You should have about 6-8 cups of shredded cabbage.
  • Chop the Bacon:
    • Cut 6 slices of bacon into small pieces.
  • Chop the Onion:
    • Finely chop 1 large onion.
  • Mince the Garlic:
    • Mince 3 cloves of garlic.
2. Cook the Bacon:
  • Heat the Pan:
    • Place a large skillet or frying pan over medium heat.
  • Cook the Bacon:
    • Add the chopped bacon to the pan and cook until crispy, about 5-7 minutes.
  • Remove and Drain:
    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon from the pan and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Leave the bacon fat in the pan.
3. Sauté the Onion and Garlic:
  • Add the Onion:
    • Add the chopped onion to the pan with the bacon fat. Sauté until the onion is soft and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  • Add the Garlic:
    • Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
4. Cook the Cabbage:
  • Add the Cabbage:
    • Add the shredded cabbage to the pan. Stir well to coat the cabbage in the bacon fat and mix it with the onions and garlic.
  • Season:
    • Season with salt, pepper, and 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (if using). Cook, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  • Optional Flavor Boost:
    • For extra flavor, add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and stir well.
5. Combine and Serve:
  • Add the Bacon Back:
    • Stir the cooked bacon back into the pan with the cabbage.
  • Garnish:
    • Garnish with chopped fresh parsley, if desired.
  • Serve:
    • Serve hot as a delicious side dish or even as a main dish with some crusty bread.

Tips for Extra Fun:

  • Make it a Meal:
    • Add cooked sausage or diced ham for a heartier dish.
